Finding comfort and support through Aurora Healing & Advocacy Services

Maria* was sitting in her car in a store parking lot after being sexually assaulted. She was scared and ashamed, but she found the courage to call the Aurora Healing & Advocacy Services 24/7 crisis hotline.

“She told me what she’d been through, and we talked about her concerns and emotions,” recalled Kim Anderson, an advocate with Aurora Healing & Advocacy Services. “She was too embarrassed to seek medical attention or report the incident to the police.”

After talking with Kim for over an hour, Maria agreed to come to Aurora Sinai Medical Center to be treated for her injuries. When she arrived, a forensic nurse provided her with compassionate care during the process of collecting evidence.

“Because of COVID-19, I could not physically be with her at Sinai. Instead, the forensic nurse called me and put me on speaker phone so we could discuss her options.”

Maria shared that she had tried to report the incident to the police, but she didn’t feel like she was being taken seriously. She agreed to let Kim call the authorities on her behalf.

“I spoke with the officer assigned to the case and explained Maria’s concerns. I told him what happened when she tried calling the police, and he agreed to come to Sinai with a female officer to interview her,” explained Kim. “Maria was feeling anxious, but once again, I was able to participate in the interview and provide support while on speakerphone.”

The interview went smoothly, and Maria’s abuser was arrested that evening.

“When I followed up with her, she told me how comforted and supported she felt by me and the forensic nurse. We helped ease the shame and anxiety she felt and empower her to receive the medical and legal support she needed.”
