After battling metastatic lung cancer for years, Pat’s family knew it was time to begin hospice care as her condition began to rapidly decline. Pat’s daughters, Debbie and Angel, were grateful for the respectful and compassionate care the Advocate Hospice team provided for their mom.
But the hospice team didn’t stop there. Debbie was concerned how her sister, Angel—a kind and sensitive woman with cognitive disabilities—would handle life without their mom. The hospice team was by their side to help Angel understand the changes that were happening and provide highly individualized and sensitive grief support throughout Pat’s end-of-life journey.
As part of her healing, the hospice team suggested that Angel might benefit from participating in Camp Bear Hugs—an annual grief support camp for children who have lost a loved one. Although the camp was intended for children, the team was confident that Angel would learn new healthy coping skills from the program.
Angel loved participating in the camp activities, including the Memory Bear workshop. Debbie said, “She made a bear using one of my mom’s shirts. It is now one of her favorite things and she carries it everywhere she goes.”
How you can help
Angel said, “Mom is my angel now.” It is only through charitable donations that the Advocate Hospice team can continue to provide this level of compassionate and comprehensive grief support for patients and their families. Your gift will help Advocate Hospice provide a variety of bereavement and support programs that are key to helping families like Debbie and Angel cope after the loss of a loved one.
