Before Mason was born, there were concerns about his heart being smaller on one side. Doctors planned to do an ultrasound soon after birth.
But the plan changed quickly after Mason was born and he needed immediate surgery to save his life.
“He looked blue when he was born; he was very sick,” shares Mason’s mom, Elizabeth.
He was transported from Advocate Children’s Hospital— Park Ridge to Advocate Children’s Hospital— Oak Lawn. Mason was born with a heart defect and other complications. He was eventually diagnosed with VACTERL association, which is a very complex disorder impacting multiple body systems.
He is now 8 months old and has undergone open heart surgery and dozens of other procedures. His family calls the Advocate team members who have cared for Mason his “angels on earth.”
“They always went above and beyond for Mason and made us feel happiness during our darkest times,” Elizabeth explains. “They made us feel as if Mason was the only one under their care with just how on top of things they were. Other than all the prayers we received, Mason is here because of them.”
Mason has endured a lot in his short life. He has a long road of medical procedures ahead, but he is a happy, strong baby boy. His family refers to him as their warrior.
